Odin's Glow

Frequently Asked Questions

The Event

  • What is Odin's Glow?

Odin's Glow will be the North East's biggest public art event of 2009. It centres around one of the North East's best loved landmarks - Roseberry Topping. There will be nine specially commissioned installations involving art, sound, light, music and performing arts from regional and national artists, along with several community events - all staged at the foot of the hill in the village of Newton under Roseberry.

  • You can see Roseberry Topping from all over the Tees Valley, why do I need to go to Newton under Roseberry to see the illumination?

Odin's Glow is not just about the illumination of Roseberry Topping - a huge feature of the event is the journey through the specially commissioned artworks exploring the Nordic past around the village. There has also been wide community involvement and several of the projects are community-based.

  • When is the event?

The event takes place on the evenings of Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday Oct 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 25th. On application for tickets online, people can choose an event ticket time slot which will include the time of departure by bus from the park and ride point, and you will be given a time for a departure bus pick up in the village about an hour and 30 minutes later.

  • Is the event suitable for children?

Yes, Odin's Glow is a family event and children are welcome to attend.

  • Can my children come on their own?

No, all children under 18 need to be accompanied by an adult.

  • How much will it cost to attend Odin's Glow?

Odin's Glow is a free event with a ticket but there will be a charge of £5 per car to use the park and ride into the village. No cars will be allowed into the village so the park and ride system is the only way in and out for everyone wishing to come to the event.

  • What if it is raining?

We suggest people should dress appropriately with warm clothing and suitable footwear.

  • What if the event has to be cancelled for any reason, for example a major outbreak of Swine Flu?

This is very unlikely. However we will hold a database of ticket holders' email addresses and would contact them directly. We would also use local radio to make any major announcements.

  • What public facilities will be in the village?

There will be food and drink concessions, public toilets and first aid facilities etc as you would expect at any large scale public event.

  • Can I walk up Roseberry Topping while this is happening?

No, we advise against this for health and safety reasons and because it could detract from the enjoyment for others.

  • Can I bring my dog?

Sorry, no dogs (except guide dogs) will be admitted.

Tickets

  • How do I get a ticket?

Limited tickets are still available via our special offers as listed here.

  • Why do I need to get an advanced ticket?

Newton under Rosberry is a small village and the event is designed for those arriving with advanced tickets only on the park and ride buses. As with all events there is limit to the audience numbers due to the amount of available open space and for health & safety reasons.

  • Can I get to Odin's Glow any other way?

No, the ticketed park and ride bus system is the only way the public audiences can get to the event, other than via the special dinner and VIP ticket offer.

  • Can I return my Odin's Glow entry tickets and car park & ride bus booking?

Yes, please call as soon as possible the ARC Arts Centre on 01642 525199 to return your tickets. Please be ready to give your name, ticket date and the booking reference number.

  • Is there a Odin's Glow standby ticket system for returned tickets?

Reserve tickets are currently unavailable. Please check back regularly for updates.

  • Why will I be given a timeslot?

Newton under Roseberry is a small and charming village and we want to ensure all visitors get the best out of the event and can see everything that is going on so we are staggering the timeslots so the village is not too crowded.

  • How long will my timeslot be?

It is anticipated it will take around one and a half hours to see the event. That will mean a maximum of around 700 people will be in the village at any one time.

  • Do I have to pay £5 if I don't come in a car?

No, the event is free but you must have a ticket. We encourage people not to use their cars, but where possible to use the local bus or train services, walk or cycle to the park and ride bus departure points. The departure point will be shown on your e-ticket.

Disability Access

  • How can disabled people gain access to the event?

Please call the ARC box office 01642 525199 and advise us of your access requirements and we will provide suitable access arrangements. If you are a registered disabled car owner we will also provide disabled car spaces.

Park & Ride and General Access

  • Why are there no other Park and Ride schemes from other areas such as Great Ayton or Stokesley?

There are unfortunately no large enough car parks south west of Newton under Roseberry for over 150 cars in one place that would enabled the organisers to provide a park & ride bus scheme for the event. The two available park & rides for advanced ticket holders are at Guisborough and Eston, a reasonably short drive away and can be reached in around 15 to 20 minutes depending on your starting location.

  • Why do I have to use the audience park and ride buses to get to the Odin's Glow event in Newton under Roseberry?

There is not enough car parking available in the village. So for the audience park and ride bus facilities have been set up in central Guisborough and also at Eston Town Hall. The audience will be taken by shuttle bus into the village of Newton under Roseberry for the Odin's Glow event and brought back again to the car parks.

  • Why will the A173 road between Guisborough through Newton under Roseberry to Great Ayton be temporarily closed to general traffic during the event?

The village of Newton under Roseberry is temporarily closed to traffic during the four event evenings. This is to allow the public audience to walk around the village safely during the event in a car free environment. The A173 will be closed and signage and traffic marshals will be re-directing traffic. The temporary road closure has been set up on the advice of the Council and Police for safety reasons.

  • I don't have a car, are there good transport links to the park and ride areas?

Yes, buses and trains run regularly.

  • Where are the park and ride buses leaving from?

The audience park and ride buses will leave from the Guisborough Fountain car parks on Rectory Lane (postcode TS14 6QF) at the back of Challoner Street, and from Eston Town Hall car park (postcode TS6 9AR) and take you to the Newton under Roseberry village and bring you back. You have to show your Odin's Glow ticket to board the bus.

  • Why do I have to pay for the park and ride?

You only have to pay if you arrive by car to the park and ride. We believe the event will be very popular and want to make sure people who apply for the free tickets do use them, and the car charge helps pay for the audience park and ride system.

  • Will I have to wait for a bus to be able to leave the village?

You should return to the bus stop you arrived at about 1 hour and 30 minutes after you arrive in the village to take the Odin's Glow shuttle bus back to the park & ride car park.

  • What if I miss my bus?

No one will be left without transport although we would ask that every effort is made to keep to the departure times stated for organisational reasons.

  • What if I want to get into the village for other purposes?

The roads will be closed during the four evenings and a traffic management team will be in place. All residents were consulted during the planning of the event and understand why the road must be closed. They are all aware of the arrangements put in place. Of course, emergency vehicle access will be available.
